FRISKY THUNDER WINS AGAIN
Braeburn Farm's homebred Frisky Thunder withstood early pressure and a powerful late surge from 3-5 favorite Edward P. Evans' Pleasant Strike to score a gate-to-wire victory in the $60,000 Daniel Van Clief Stakes Saturday June 28 at Colonial Downs.

Frisky Thunder, by Thunder Rumble, out of Port St. Mary (G) by Seattle Slew, withstood early pressure and a powerful late surge from 3-5 favorite Pleasant Strike to score a gate-to-wire victory in the $60,000 Daniel Van Clief Stakes Saturday June 28 at Colonial Downs.

Frisky Thunder broke sharply under jockey Eric Camacho to seize command of the 1 1/16-mile race right from the start. Hugo also broke well to apply early pressure to Frisky Thunder, racing a length behind the leader as the field hit the first turn.

Frisky Thunder edged away from Hugo around the turn to establish a 1½-length lead going into the backstretch after a quarter in :23.75. Frisky Thunder maintained his lead through a half in :47.45 and three-quarters in 1:11.97 before shrugging off Hugo to open a clear lead in upper stretch.

Frisky Thunder was four lengths clear at the eighth pole but the early exertions seemed to finally catch up to him in deep stretch, right as Pleasant Strike launched a powerful rally down the center of the course.

Pleasant Strike was flying on the outside but Frisky Thunder seemed to find a little extra in the final strides to hold him at bay by a half-length on the line. Rutledge Farm's Researcher was another 5¼ lengths back to finish an even third.

Frisky Thunder ran the 1 1/16 miles on a firm turf course in 1:43.52.

The Van Clief win was the third straight for Frisky Thunder. The 4-year-old gelding annexed his first stakes two weeks ago in the $60,000 John D. Marsh Stakes at Colonial.

James W. Murphy trains Frisky Thunder, who is now five for eight on the turf.

VA-BREDS DOMINATE FRIDAY AT COLONIAL
Virginia-breds took full advantage of the new 100% purse bonus at Colonial Downs Friday night, winning three of the nine races at the New Kent oval.

Ten of the 14 Virginia-bred or sired horses that raced at Colonial on Friday picked up checks, led by winners River Magic, Uptown Boots and Treasure Map. The 10 earned $42,230 in bonus money from the Virginia Breeders Fund.

Prior to last Friday, 119 Virginia-breds had earned 100% bonuses totaling $313,990. Last season, utilizing a 50% bonus, $240,000 was earned during the entire 42 day meet.
Twenty Virginia-breds have won open races earning bonuses of $162,735. In addition there has been 19 seconds worth $69,690, 22 thirds worth $43,440, 24 fourths worth $24,000, 19 fifths worth $10,125 and 14 sixths worth $4,000.

On Friday, Thomas M. Beach, Jr.'s River Magic started the Virginia-bred assault with an upset victory in race 3. The 8-year-old Magic Prospect gelding re-affirmed his affinity for the Secretariat Turf Course with his fourth win from nine starts in New Kent. Beach's wife, Beverly K. Beach, bred River Magic, who is conditioned by James R. Jackson.

Mar Jim Farms, LLC's Uptown Boots continued the Virginia-bred parade with a 1¾-length victory over fellow Virginia-bred Hard Rockin in race 4. Marjorie Flowers and M. Deborah Kinney bred Uptown Boots, a 4-year-old Expelled filly. Hard Rockin was bred by Hamilton A. Smith, who also owns and trains the 3-year-old Hay Halo filly.

Treasure Map and Highcrest completed yet another all Virginia-bred exacta in race 7 after a thrilling duel throughout the stretch ended with Treasure Map a neck in front of pacesetting Highcrest. Treasure Map is a homebred racing for Mr. and Mrs. Bertram R. Firestone. The 4-year-old Theatrical gelding is trained by James W. Murphy and was the highlight of a two-win day for jockey Julian Pimentel.

C. Oliver Iselin, III bred Highcrest. Sanna Hendriks trains the 4-year-old Unbridled Jet gelding.

FORMER VA-BRED CHAMP WINS AGAIN
Former Virginia-bred Champion Older Mare Debbie Sue returned the winner's circle for the first time since the 2006 Maryland Million Ladies Stakes after a beautiful rail-skimming trip under Luis Garcia produced a neck victory in a $28,000 allowance Sunday June 29 at Colonial Downs.

Debbie Sue settled back into fifth early as Beau's Trip cleared out to an easy lead through early fractions of :24.84 and :48.91. Debbie Sue stayed relaxed on the trail down the backstretch and dropped back to seventh on turn.

Beaus Trip continued to lead to the top of the lane through three-quarters in 1:12.84 but even money favorite Miss Lombardi headed her in upper stretch and Debbie Sue found room at the rail to launch a powerful mid-stretch rally.

Debbie Sue blew past Beau's Trip and Miss Lombardi to take a clear lead inside the sixteenth pole but a fresh challenge loomed in the form of Diamond Dina, who suddenly found her best stride on the outside after having to steady in upper stretch.

Diamond Dina finished very fast but Debbie Sue was resolute on the rail to prevail by a neck. Miss Lombardi was 1¼-lengths back in third, a neck to the better of a game Beau's Trip.

Debbie Sue ran the mile in 1:37.56 on the firm turf. The 7-year-old Citidancer mare improved her record to six wins from 31 starts for trainer Hamilton Smith and owner Deboarh S. and Fred S. Greene, Jr.

Smith also won with Beachcomber in race 7 to end a frustrating start to the season. The three-time defending champion trainer came into Sunday's card with just three winners to go with six seconds and five thirds from 31 starters in New Kent.

Debbie Sue's second biggest win came at Colonial in the $60,000 Brookemeade Stakes in 2006. The 2008 edition is slated for Saturday July 12.
